The Dettol Foundation Makes a Case for Community Support

Since 2004, The Dettol Foundation has worked with local charities and community groups in the Swindon Borough to make a difference to families and young children.

2005 Case Studies

Marlborough House

Marlborough House is part of the Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust and provides an adolescent service for young people aged 12-18 with severe emotional difficulties, from Swindon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Whilst the Adolescent Unit had recently been re-built, there had been no provision for outdoor games for patients to help them relax during breaks from therapy. In May 2005 The Dettol Foundation’s donation of £300 helped to provide a welcome break for patients to unwind and enjoy the outdoors.

“We are extremely thankful for the help and support that The Dettol Foundation has given. The purchase of outside play/sports equipment that has been made in consultation with the young people, will greatly enhance the quality of life for both present and future patients.”

-Kate Hannam, General Manager, Marlborough House.

The Welcome Centre

The Welcome Centre is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Park’s area of East Swindon through the provision of services for local parents and children.

For some time, childcare workers at the Centre required uniforms, however funding had restricted their purchase. The Dettol Foundation’s donation of polo shirts showing the project logo allows both children and parents to distinguish workers from parents and improve the safety of the Centre.

“The staff uniforms donated by The Dettol Foundation will be used by childcare staff to support the safety of our children. As the polo shirts make staff members clearly identifiable this will be really helpful, especially when we’re working outside the Centre at hostels and during outings and visits. On behalf of all our members of staff at the Centre I would like to thank The Dettol Foundation.”

-Lisa Double, Children’s Services Manager, The Welcome Centre.

Swindon Care & Repair

Swindon Care & Repair is the Home Improvement Agency covering the Swindon area. The agency works with vulnerable families with small children to ensure their homes are safe by fitting stair gates, cupboard locks and safety film for windows.

Fitting the safety items is a major problem for many vulnerable or disadvantaged families who may be single parents and not have access to the skills or tools to fit these items safely. The funding from The Dettol Foundation paid for a handyman to fit the equipment in the homes of these families.

“There is a growing need within the Swindon area for a service to be provided for vulnerable families with young children.  Thanks to funding from The Dettol Foundation we are able to work with these families to ensure their homes are safe environments in which to live.”

-Helen Holly, Swindon Care & Repair Project Manager.

The Family Mediation Service

Based in Swindon, the Family Mediation Service is a child focused charity working to protect the welfare of children caught in the breakdown of their parents’ relationship.

Training staff to be able to carry out their important role can be costly. The funding from The Dettol Foundation paid for one member of staff, Paul Bradley, to attend a Community Mediation training course. On completion of the training, Paul received an Open College Network qualification, which enabled him to become part of the Re-Connect team that works with young people and their families to prevent homelessness and help repair family relationships.

“Our Re-Connect team is a vital part of our service and Paul’s training will enable even more young people to benefit from their support and guidance. We are extremely grateful to The Dettol Foundation and the wonderful work they do.”

-Wendy Hall, Chief Executive of the Family Mediation Service.

Family Welfare Association

The Family Welfare Association offers a home-based service to families in deprived areas of Swindon. The Association works directly with parents and children around issues such as improving parenting skills, raising self esteem, facilitating positive relationships within the family, school and community.

Their support for children in particular is based around play, as often families don’t have the funds to purchase games and play equipment for their children. The funding from The Dettol Foundation was used to buy board games, puzzles, books and craft materials that families can use in their homes.

“Bringing up children can be hard and at times stressful, especially if you’re going through financial difficulties or a relationship breakdown. Our team provide lots of advice and support to families but we often don’t have the funding to purchase recreational items such as these. Thanks to The Dettol Foundation, I’m sure we’ll now see lots more smiles on the faces of children around Swindon!”

-Isobel Weller, Project Manager for Children’s Support Services at the Family Welfare Association.
