The Dettol Foundation Makes a Case for Community Support

Since 2004, The Dettol Foundation has worked with local charities and community groups in the Swindon Borough to make a difference to families and young children.

2007 Donations - Case studies

U-Too

U-Too, the young mother’s support charity, was given a new laptop that will help members reach their learning goals. Gail McKay and Carolyn White run U-Too Training, which provides accredited courses designed to help young mothers and mothers-to-be. The young women are referred to the programmes by midwives, Connexions and often by word of mouth. The courses cover issues such as health and diet during pregnancy, preparing for childbirth, getting the best from doctors and nurses, breast v. bottle feeding, changing nappies and coping with crying.

To be inclusive, there is also a course for young dads and dads-to-be offering them advice about how they can be more involved before and during labour, as well as afterwards with their babies. The laptop will provide an essential resource for mothers who need to complete their coursework out of library hours.
We currently pre book sessions on the Library's computers where our young mums and mums to be can work towards their qualifications. The disadvantage is that these computers do not have printing facilities so the tutor has to save the work on a CD and print at home. The laptop will enable learners to work in the training room if they need to finish off a piece of work or catch up on a session missed.”

-Carolyn White, founder of U-Too.

TWIGS

TWIGS (therapeutic work in gardening in Swindon) is a therapeutic gardening project which aims to give people experiencing mental health problems the chance to regain confidence, self esteem and learn new skills. It is a stepping stone to recovery, further education, training and employment. The Dettol Foundation’s donation will support the fundraising day TWIGS are organising to raise money for their members.
“We are all very excited about our fundraising day, having t-shirts for the team will create fantastic team spirit and we are thrilled about being able to have a band playing on the day. The donation from The Dettol Foundation will help make our day one to remember, and hopefully raise lots of money to help TWIGS.”

-Allan Holland, TWIGS.

WILSAR

WILSAR (Wiltshire Search and Rescue) were provided with three brand new GPS navigation systems to help search for local missing people. The Dettol Foundation provided the team consisting of 30 members with the portable navigation systems to help them search the wide open spaces of Wiltshire. WILSAR, the Swindon branch of The Association of Lowland Search and Rescue teams, searches for missing people or items such as evidence in criminal cases.  All the operational members are volunteers and are trained to the standards laid down by the national association, with one member of the team always on duty.

This donation has added to the teams professional search equipment which includes its own control vehicle, radio communications equipment and other specialist kit.

“The GPS systems are such a necessity to the work that we do. By now having the new portable OS Grid reference devices we’re able to speed up the service we provide for the local police. The Dettol Foundation has potentially helped our team to save lives by enabling a quicker response and by helping us to train new volunteers with the advanced technological equipment.”

-Sarah Courtney-Green, WILSAR Fund Raising Manager.

Swindon Practice Development Centre

The Dettol Foundation has helped to update Swindon’s Practice Development Centre by donating new equipment to help their blossoming art students. The new chairs and art display boards will enable the services users with learning disabilities to show off their meaningful art work. The centre uses creative approaches to help its members express themselves through art, story telling, image work and Music with Drama. Much of the work that they do involves helping those with disabilities and enabling them to express their emotions through other means than just verbal communication.

2007 Beneficiaries

We are all very excited about having the new chairs, they look lovely and our members are very grateful. We are also so pleased to be able to display the great work that is created in the centre and show people how important this scheme really is to the participants.

-Kate, Director of Swindon Practice Development Centre.
